CHOPS & Associates Live Animation is the brainchild of Gary Jesch, a rockstar in the art of performance animation. He pioneeered the use of live, interactive computer-generated virtual characters starting in 1993 and now serves the special-events industry, as well as performing at tradeshows, corporate meetings, childrens’ shows and in live streaming videos on the web. For Indie Music Fest, he’ll be appearing as “CHOPS,” the Cyber Human on a Performance System, the virtual spokesperson for the festival, during the pre-event stage and at the fest itself at the Henderson Pavilion. CHOPS will share the Master of Ceremonies duties and bring a sense of wonder and excitement to the live event.
To understand how it’s possible for a cartoon avatar to speak in real time, picture a man behind a curtain at the controls of a 3D animation software system, who can see and hear his audience with the use of a hidden camera and mic. When he talks, the character talks at the same time with lip sync, funny expressions and special effects, appearing on a video screen a short distance away. For web video, these animations are recorded in real time and made into short movies or sent as live video streams. “I’m very excited about helping and supporting the Indie Music Fest,” Jesch says. “It’s a really great opportunity for artists to get exposure and to learn from the greatest in the business. It’s an honor to be a part of something so important.”
Jesch is also helping the IMF conduct conference calls and meetings through his other company, Console Call, which he started in 2009 to help people and businesses use the web to meet and share information online. Since then, Console Call has found its place as a helpful service for those hosting webinars, webcasts, live streaming video and online meetings around the world.
